“If we were able to communicate we didn’t have to”  - Avital Ronell

Fanute is a new term from the U.S. that means turning a bad situation towards the better. The word arose from the verse in a song by rapper French Montana when segregated lyrics melted together in the ears of his fans and became a new word with its own autonomous connotations.

Through graphical and sculptural works the exhibition investigates unintentional displacement and meaning brought forward from the blending of technologies and modern culture. Johansen reflects upon the mechanisms of contemporary communication and comments on a propensity to frustrate over its incapabilities, playfully promoting it as a liberation.

At a time when communication may seem unavoidable yet vehemently needed, a freedom can be found in the negation of communicative responsibilities and control - with or without self-preservation. Johansen therefore invites the audience to reflect upon which possibilities can be offered for understanding themselves as something else, within the distortion or transformation of what we say.
